Canary Islands Center to Host Expert Session on Hantavirus Risks
Microbiologist Samuel Rodríguez Martín will host an information session this Friday at the Canary Islands Popular Culture Center to address public concerns and clarify the scientific facts regarding hantavirus risks in the shipping industry.
Recent public concern over a ship under sanitary surveillance has highlighted how easily misinformation can spread when technical facts are missing. To address this, the Canary Islands Popular Culture Center (CCPC) is hosting an information session this Friday, May 15, at 7:00 p.m. The event will take place at the San Borondón Hall, located at 1 Daute Street in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
The session is open to the public and will be led by microbiologist Samuel Rodríguez Martín. A native of San Andrés and a graduate of the University of La Laguna, Dr. Rodríguez Martín will explain the biological nature of the hantavirus. His presentation aims to provide a clear, technical look at how the virus spreads and what the actual epidemiological risks are in today’s context.
In addition to his teaching role at the Abad Serrador Vocational Training Center and his expertise in biotechnology and human microbiota, Dr. Rodríguez Martín is a dedicated science communicator. His talk is designed to counter recent media speculation with scientific facts, helping the public understand how maritime health risks are managed. International regulations already require strict protocols in the shipping industry to prevent the spread of diseases from animals to humans.
Ultimately, the CCPC hopes this event will provide the community with the reliable information needed to analyze the situation calmly and avoid unnecessary alarm.
