Canary Islands Brace for Unseasonable Heat and Strong Winds Ahead of Weather Shift
The Canary Islands are bracing for a weekend of unseasonably warm temperatures and strong winds ahead of a shift toward more unstable weather on Monday.
The Canary Islands are bracing for a weekend of unseasonably warm temperatures and strengthening winds, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). This warm spell is expected to lead into more unsettled weather across the islands starting Monday.
On Sunday, Tenerife and San Sebastián de La Gomera will see highs of around 28°C. In contrast, La Palma will be cooler, with temperatures between 21°C and 24°C, while El Hierro will remain the coolest at 20°C. Northern areas can expect cloudy skies and a chance of light, scattered rain, particularly in higher regions during the early morning.
The main concern for the weekend is the wind. While trade winds will generally be moderate, Aemet warns of strong gusts, particularly on the southeastern and northwestern slopes during the second half of the day. This is a sign of the weather shift arriving on Monday, when yellow weather warnings for wind and heat will be in effect for Lanzarote, La Gomera, and Gran Canaria.
These conditions are caused by the interaction between the Atlantic anticyclone and the islands' terrain, which compresses airflow and creates localized, intense gusts. Although skies are expected to clear in the afternoons, authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and exercise caution, especially in areas under yellow alerts, as the weather turns more unstable early next week.
