Canary Islands Brace for Strong Trade Winds and Unsettled Weather

Source: El Día

The Canary Islands face unsettled weather today as strong trade winds and light rain impact the region, with authorities advising caution in areas prone to powerful gusts.

The Canary Islands are facing another day of unsettled weather this Wednesday, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). Strong trade winds are the main concern, with powerful gusts expected to hit higher altitudes and exposed slopes across the islands.

The northern parts of the more mountainous islands will remain mostly cloudy with light rain, which could become heavier in some mid-altitude areas. In contrast, the southern regions will see more sunshine, particularly on Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, where clouds are expected to clear as the day goes on.

Temperatures will remain steady and mild. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, expect highs of 20°C and lows of 16°C, while San Sebastián de La Gomera will see temperatures between 15°C and 20°C. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will range from 15°C to 19°C. Valverde will be the coolest spot, staying between 12°C and 14°C. The eastern islands will be slightly warmer, with highs of 22°C in Arrecife and 21°C in Puerto del Rosario.

Light frost is possible on the highest peaks of Tenerife, highlighting the sharp temperature differences at high altitudes. The strong winds, which will be at their peak during the morning and midday, will particularly affect the southern tip of La Palma, the El Paso area, and the northwest and southeast slopes of Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Because these trade winds can impact travel and outdoor work, residents and visitors are advised to exercise caution in areas where gusts are strongest.
