Canary Islands Brace for Heatwave and Strong Winds This Saturday

The Canary Islands are bracing for a day of contrasting weather this Saturday, August 29, 2026. According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), residents and visitors should prepare for a significant rise in temperatures, particularly in higher-altitude areas.

Meteorological models suggest that parts of southeast Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Fuerteventura will see temperatures hit or exceed 30°C. While these inland and high-altitude regions will feel the heat, coastal areas are expected to remain more stable, thanks to the cooling influence of the trade winds.

Strong northeast winds will be a key feature of the weekend. AEMET has issued warnings for the southeast and northwest slopes of the islands with higher terrain, where gusts are expected to be particularly strong during the early morning and late afternoon. These conditions will also affect the surrounding waters, with rough seas and winds reaching force 5 to 6.

The islands will follow their typical weather pattern: northern slopes will see some cloud cover, especially early and late in the day, though skies should clear as the day goes on. Meanwhile, the south will enjoy mostly clear skies.

While the north may experience some light, isolated drizzle, the main story for the day is the moderate heat in the interior and southern regions. For most of the islands, temperatures will remain steady once the morning clouds clear.
