Canary Islands Announces 2026/2027 Academic Calendar

The Canary Islands Ministry of Education has released the official academic calendar for the 2026/2027 school year. By publishing these dates well in advance, the government aims to help families balance their work and home lives. The schedule ensures students receive the legally required 175 days of instruction while balancing their studies with necessary breaks.

Start Dates Classes will begin in stages to better suit the needs of different age groups:

• September 9: Preschool and Primary education.
• September 10: Secondary education (ESO).
• September 11: Baccalaureate.
• September 16: Vocational Training and higher artistic studies.
• September 21: Official language schools.

End Dates Most students will finish the school year on June 22, 2027. However, there are exceptions:

• May 14: Second-year Baccalaureate.
• May 27: Second-year Higher Grade Vocational Training and language studies.
• June 11: Higher artistic disciplines.
• June 18: First-year Baccalaureate.

Holidays and Breaks The calendar includes set holiday periods:

• Christmas: December 23, 2026, to January 8, 2027.
• Easter: March 22 to March 26, 2027.
• Public Holidays: November 2 (All Saints' Day), December 7 (Teacher and Student Day), and December 8 (Immaculate Conception).

Local Flexibility The schedule accounts for the unique traditions of each island, including specific patron saint days like Our Lady of the Pine in Gran Canaria (September 8) and the festivities of Los Volcanes in Lanzarote and La Graciosa (September 15).

In addition to these, each town council will designate two local holidays. Schools also have the flexibility to choose up to four additional non-school days, provided they are approved by their municipal school boards, allowing them to adapt the calendar to their specific local needs.
