Canary Islands Animal Shelter to Install Security Cameras Following Recurring Abandonments
The Adepac Canarias animal shelter is installing security cameras to deter recurring abandonment after a dog named Pascual was found tied to the facility's perimeter fence.
Animal abandonment at the Adepac Canarias shelter has once again exposed how vulnerable facilities are when they lack proper surveillance. After a young dog was found tied to the shelter’s perimeter fence, the organization and local police are now working to install security cameras to address the ongoing issue.
The dog, a one-year-old male named "Pascual," was left with basic supplies. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident; it is part of a recurring pattern of abandonment. By installing cameras at the entrances, the shelter hopes to deter people from leaving animals behind and to help identify those responsible. In the case of Pascual, they are currently reviewing footage from nearby municipal security cameras to track down who left him.
These acts go against the spirit of current animal welfare laws, which aim to increase penalties for abandonment and encourage responsible pet ownership. Pascual’s case serves as a stark reminder of the gaps in animal protection across the islands. For now, Pascual is undergoing health checks and a mandatory quarantine. Once he completes these protocols, he will be ready for adoption and the search for a permanent home.
