The Canary Islands Wrestling Federation and The Gambia have formed a strategic partnership to leverage traditional wrestling for cultural exchange, technical training, and social development.

Sports diplomacy is helping to share island traditions with the world. Following the 14th ECOWAS Wrestling Tournament (TOLAC 2026) at the Serrekunda East Mini Stadium, the Canary Islands Wrestling Federation has formed a strategic partnership with its counterpart in The Gambia. Facilitated by the NGO STARUP Corazón Solidario, this agreement aims to go beyond competition, using sport as a tool for cultural exchange and social development.

The agreement was signed by Gambian federation president Matar Saine and Sonja Arup, representing Canarian federation head Francisco Rivero Vega. It outlines a long-term plan that includes technical training for referees and managers, as well as research projects connecting physical activity to health and the preservation of cultural heritage.

The partnership also emphasizes the social role of sport. The roadmap includes plans to support vulnerable groups, promote gender equality, and establish anti-violence protocols. For the Canary Islands, this collaboration recognizes the strength of their own wrestling system while deepening the historical and geographical ties between the archipelago and The Gambia.

Supported by STARUP Corazón Solidario, this initiative highlights how traditional sports can foster unity and diplomacy. By combining academic training with athlete exchanges, both organizations hope to use wrestling as a foundation for sustainable development and intercultural dialogue, while raising the international profile of Canarian wrestling.
