Canary Islands Amateur Team Makes Historic UEFA Regions' Cup Debut in Latvia

The Canary Islands football team faces a historic challenge this week as it makes its debut in the Intermediate Stage of the UEFA Regions' Cup. This tournament is the highest level of amateur football in Europe, with the winner of each group advancing directly to the continental final.

Led by coach Sergio Alonso, the team arrives in Latvia as the reigning national champions, a title they earned in Tarrasa last March. The squad is placed in a competitive group of four and must play three matches in just seven days, running from this Wednesday through Tuesday, October 8. Their opponents include the host team, Latvia’s Zemgale, as well as Israel’s Hapoel Beit Shean Mesilot and Hungary’s Pest.

The coaching staff has highlighted a significant gap in fitness levels between the teams. While the Canary Islands' domestic season is just beginning, Zemgale has already played 16 league matches. This difference in competitive rhythm is the team's biggest hurdle, compounded by a difficult journey to their base at the Rupnica Football Center in Latvia.

Despite the logistical challenges and limited time to train on the local pitch, Coach Alonso remains focused on the team’s core identity—the same style of play that secured their national title. The opening match kicks off this Wednesday at 15:00 (Canarian time) and will be streamed on the Tenerife Inter-Island Football Federation’s YouTube channel. It will be a true test of the team’s maturity as they look to prove themselves on the European stage with the full support of the Archipelago behind them.
