
Canary Islands 112 Incidents Down 5.3% Over New Year
Canary Islands emergency services responded to 833 incidents over New Year's Eve and Day, marking a 5.3% decrease from last year, while emergency calls dropped by 15.9%.
The Canary Islands' emergency services, CECOES 112, which operates under the regional government's Department of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion and Water, responded to 833 incidents during New Year's Eve and New Year's Day morning. These interventions, occurring between 10:00 PM on December 31st and 7:00 AM on January 1st, represent a 5.3% decrease from the previous year, when 880 incidents were recorded.
The number of calls to 112 dropped even more significantly, by 15.9%. This year, 2,799 calls were received, down from 3,329 the previous year. This suggests people are using the emergency line more responsibly, reserving it for urgent situations rather than general inquiries.
Looking at the types of incidents:
- Healthcare assistance (such as illness, medical advice, or transfers between hospitals) saw 327 incidents, a 7.5% rise from 304 last year.
- Personal safety issues (like property crimes, public disturbances, or violence) accounted for 319 incidents, a slight increase of 1.5% from 314 last year.
- Traffic and other accidents rose by 4.6%, with 67 incidents compared to 64 last year.
However, some categories saw a decrease:
- Technical assistance (including road issues, fallen power lines, animal rescues, or water pumping) dropped by 17.8%, from 73 incidents last year to 60 this year.
- Fire extinguishing saw the biggest fall, down 46% with 41 incidents compared to 76 last year.
Breaking it down by province, the Las Palmas control room handled 1,204 calls and managed 470 incidents. In comparison, the Santa Cruz de Tenerife control room received 1,595 calls but dealt with fewer incidents, at 363.
