Canarian Master Breaks 17-Year Spanish Heavy Hammer Record
Tenerife thrower Vicente Damián González Hernández broke a 17-year-old Spanish record in the Master M55 heavy hammer throw with a throw of 17.58 meters at the XII Canary Islands Master Winter Track Championship in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
Canarian master athletics recently saw a major national sporting achievement: a Spanish record, untouched for nearly two decades, was finally broken. This accomplishment highlights the strength of veteran competitions and the dedication of athletes in the Canary Islands, showing how this sport continues to grow in popularity.
The star of this achievement is Vicente Damián González Hernández, a thrower representing Tenerife CajaCanarias. He set a new Spanish record in the heavy hammer throw for the Master M55 category. This happened yesterday at the XII Canary Islands Master Winter Track Championship, held at the Francisco Peraza municipal stadium in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. González Hernández threw an impressive 17.58 meters, beating the previous record of 17 years, which was set in 2007 by Ramón Estapiña Fernández in Águilas (Murcia).
The Tenerife athlete secured the record on his second attempt. His third throw was also strong, reaching 17.55 meters, and he chose to finish his competition after just three throws. This success now points him towards the Spanish Master Hammer Throw Championship, scheduled for February 28th in Durango (Vizcaya), where he'll have another chance to prove his excellent form.
The regional championship, organized by the Canarian Athletics Federation and the San Cristóbal de La Laguna City Council, brought together over 200 male and female athletes from across the archipelago. For six hours, the event featured a full schedule of track and field events, drawing a large crowd to the Francisco Peraza stands. This clearly shows the increasing interest in athletics throughout the Canary Islands.
