Canarian Architectural Community to Honor Legacy of Federico García Barba

This Thursday, the Canarian architectural community will gather to honor the life and work of Federico García Barba, a visionary whose influence on the islands' landscape and identity remains profound. The Official College of Architects of Tenerife, La Gomera, and El Hierro (COA), in partnership with the Royal Canarian Academy of Fine Arts (Racba), is hosting a commemorative event at 7:00 p.m. at the COA headquarters in Santa Cruz de Tenerife to reflect on his significant contributions to urban planning and regional design.

García Barba’s legacy extends far beyond the buildings he designed. As the editor of the architectural magazine BASA from 1987 to 1990, he helped professionalize architectural discourse in the Canary Islands, creating a space for critical thinking that shaped generations of architects. His commitment to the field was also evident in his institutional leadership, including his time as president of the COA delegation for Tenerife, La Gomera, and El Hierro (2010–2013) and his active roles in urban planning commissions.

In December 2007, his career was formally recognized when he was inducted as a full academician at the Racba. During Thursday’s tribute, colleagues and friends—including COA dean María Nieves Febles, Catalina García Trujillo, Pedro Domínguez Anadón, Alejandro Beautell, Virgilio Gutiérrez, and Arsenio Pérez—will share insights into his life and professional philosophy.

More than just a personal tribute, the event highlights architecture as a vital social and cultural discipline. García Barba championed a model of territorial management that viewed urban planning as a way to interpret and protect local heritage. Following his passing last year, this gathering serves as a collective reflection on a career defined by technical excellence and a deep, lasting commitment to the Canary Islands.
