Canarian Actress and Union Advocate Emilia Cazorla Dies at 62
Canarian actress and union activist Emilia Cazorla, a foundational figure in the islands' arts sector and co-founder of the Canary Islands Actors' Union, has passed away at age 62.
The Canary Islands’ cultural community is mourning the loss of one of its most dedicated advocates. Actress Emilia Cazorla passed away this Monday, marking the end of a career defined not only by her performances but also by her tireless work in education and union activism.
Born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 1962, Cazorla spent her final years away from the stage while battling a long-term illness. Her legacy, however, is firmly rooted in the professional development of the islands' arts sector. She was a key figure in founding the Canary Islands Actors' Union, an organization that has been essential in protecting the rights of performers and fighting against the instability often found in the industry.
Beyond her activism, Cazorla was a talented teacher and performer. Her career included roles in early regional television productions and various films, most notably the feature La isla interior, directed by Dunia Ayaso and Félix Sabroso.
Producer Israel Reyes of the company Clapso praised the actress for her integrity and her commitment to dignifying the acting profession. Her passing is a significant loss for the Canarian theatrical community, which has lost a versatile performer and a passionate advocate who helped build the foundations for the industry as it stands today.
