CajaCanarias to Host Screening of La Palma Volcanic Eruption Film 'Kipuka'
The CajaCanarias Foundation will host a free screening of the short film Kipuka this Friday in Santa Cruz de La Palma, featuring a post-film discussion and musical performance to help the community process the impact of the recent volcanic eruption.
Artistic expression continues to play a vital role in helping the community of La Palma process the trauma left by the recent volcanic eruption. To support this, the CajaCanarias Foundation is hosting a special event this Friday at its headquarters in Santa Cruz de La Palma, featuring the short film Kipuka, an island in a sea of lava. The screening begins at 7:00 p.m., and admission is free until the venue reaches capacity. The event aims to explore the deep psychological and territorial impact the eruption had on the island.
Co-directed by Paula Candelaria Ventura and Javi Armas, the film uses fiction to examine human resilience. It follows a mother and son—played by Isabel Ordaz and Armas—as they struggle to cope with the loss of their home. The film is notable for its striking visuals, which treat the landscape as a central character, highlighting the emotional difficulty of leaving one’s roots behind after a natural disaster.
The screening will be followed by a discussion featuring Javi Armas and renowned La Palma musician Luis Morera, who contributed to the film’s soundtrack. In addition to sharing his insights on the project, Morera will perform a short live set, adding a musical layer to this evening of reflection and emotional healing.
