The CajaCanarias Foundation will host "Against Oblivion: Democracy, Rights, and Literature," a free series exploring democratic memory and human rights with speakers like Joan Garcés and Héctor Abad Faciolince, on April 7 and 8 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The CajaCanarias Foundation has announced a series of events exploring democratic memory and human rights, topics that are always important in Spain. These sessions, called "Against Oblivion: Democracy, Rights, and Literature," are part of the "Spring at the Foundation 2026" program. They will take place on April 7 and 8 at the CajaCanarias Cultural Space in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Admission is free until all seats are taken.

The first discussion, titled "When History Demands Justice," is scheduled for April 7 at 7:00 PM. It will feature Joan Garcés and Joaquín González Ibáñez. Garcés will share his insights from his direct involvement in major political events of the 20th century. González Ibáñez will offer an academic and legal viewpoint, focusing on the study and protection of fundamental rights. Pilar García Padilla, an experienced communications professional, will moderate the conversation, which aims to examine the importance of these principles and current challenges.

The second session, on April 8 at the same time, is called "Writing Against Oblivion." This event will include writer Héctor Abad Faciolince and journalist Mariola Cubells. Literature will be the main focus, used to discuss how we preserve memory and understand the human experience. Abad Faciolince, a Colombian author, is known for his work that blends personal experiences with recent history, creating deeply emotional and ethical stories. Cubells will interview him, giving the audience a chance to learn about the creative process and beliefs of one of the most respected voices in contemporary Ibero-American literature.

In other news, the CajaCanarias Foundation also had a significant presence at ARCOmadrid 2026. King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain visited the foundation's stand last Thursday during their opening tour of the contemporary art fair, which runs at Ifema until Sunday. During their visit, the monarchs spoke with Humberto Orán, the foundation's president. He explained CajaCanarias' involvement in the event and its efforts to preserve and promote the art of the Canary Islands. The Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, was also present at the meeting.
