The CajaCanarias Foundation is hosting a series of discussions, workshops, and performances in Santa Cruz de Tenerife from May 13 to July 10 to address gender inequality and support women in the professional comedy industry.

The CajaCanarias Foundation has launched a new series of events titled You "Laugh" Like a Girl, designed to examine the current landscape for women in professional comedy. Running from May 13 to July 10 at the Cultural Space in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the program addresses the structural challenges female comedians face, including the gender gap, job instability, and a lack of professional support networks.

Moderated by journalist Valeria Vegas, the series features two main discussion forums. The first, Comedy with Perspective, takes place on May 13 at 7:00 p.m. and features comedians Jéssika Rojano, Sil de Castro, and Esther Gimeno Gascón. A second session, Laughing So As Not to Be Silent, follows on June 30 at 7:00 p.m. with Elsa Ruiz, Almu Lasacre, and Maika Jurado.

In addition to these discussions, the program offers practical training through female clown workshops led by researcher and actress Isabel Morera Cáceres. Details on dates and registration are available on the foundation’s website. The series concludes on July 10 at 8:00 p.m. with a performance of the monologue Disfrutona by presenter Eva Soriano.

These events aim to highlight the power dynamics and prejudices that continue to exist within the entertainment industry. Historically, comedy has been male-dominated, leaving female performers to navigate public scrutiny, job insecurity, and a lack of mentorship. By providing a platform for debate and professional training, the CajaCanarias Foundation hopes to promote greater equity and strengthen the presence of women in comedy.
