CajaCanarias Foundation Launches ‘A Matter of Manners’ Film Series
The CajaCanarias Foundation in Tenerife is hosting a free film series titled "A Matter of Manners," featuring screenings of The Grand Budapest Hotel and Emma to explore the evolution of social etiquette.
The CajaCanarias Foundation has announced its film schedule for this month, featuring a series titled "A Matter of Manners." The program explores how social etiquette and protocol serve as both tools for interaction and defense mechanisms throughout history.
The Tenerife-based institution has selected two films that examine the rigidity of social norms from different perspectives. Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel is set in a fictional Central European country between the world wars, where maintaining appearances acts as a shield against political chaos. Autumn de Wilde’s adaptation of Emma moves to 19th-century rural England, showing how strict social hierarchies shape the romantic lives and personal growth of its characters.
By highlighting the "comedy of manners" genre, the series invites viewers to consider how the definition of "good manners" has evolved—from Jane Austen’s literary satire to modern cinematic style. The films challenge the audience to reflect on the fine line between polite behavior and genuine emotional honesty.
Both screenings will be held at the CajaCanarias Cultural Space in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Admission is free, though seating is limited. The Grand Budapest Hotel will be shown this Monday, followed by Emma on July 20th. Both sessions begin at 7:00 PM. For more information, please visit the Foundation’s website.
