The CajaCanarias Foundation invites you to the "Visibility Against the Current" days with discussions, exhibitions, film screenings and concerts dedicated to the themes of migration, integration and human rights.

The CajaCanarias Foundation invites you to the "Visibility Against the Current" days – a place for meetings and discussions on important topics. It will address how to establish dialogue between different cultures, help people integrate into society, and take a critical look at migration policies.

From October 13 to 18, the CajaCanarias Cultural Center in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (and the theatrical performance – at the Leal Theater in La Laguna) awaits you with interesting cultural and social events: forums, social theater, humorous performances against racism, film, and music. Detailed information is available on the website www.cajacanarias.com.

"Visibility Against the Current" is an opportunity to reflect on why migration processes arise and how they affect society, which is becoming increasingly diverse. We will talk about people who, despite difficulties with laws and prejudices, are moving forward, and about how new forms of coexistence enrich our society. The main goal is to emphasize the importance of protecting human rights.

The program will open with a discussion "Shelter of Coexistence" on October 13 at 19:00 at the CajaCanarias Cultural Center. It will feature experts: Claudia Neira Bermúdez (director of the Centroamérica Cuenta festival), Filippo Maria Ricci (Gazzetta dello Sport correspondent in Spain), Yvonne Armenteros Páez (president of the Canary Intercultural Institute), Jessica Retis (journalist researching Latin American migration), and Tesh Sidi (Member of Congress from Sumar). The discussion will be moderated by journalist and writer Nicolás Castellano.

Another discussion, "Building Bridges of Empathy," will take place on October 17 at 19:00 at the same location. Speakers will include: Faissal Elattifi Hajami (founder of the Entre Mares Sociocultural Association and Arabic translator for the police), Khadija Amin (journalist and human rights activist from Afghanistan), Lucía González Duque (president of the Batuta National Foundation and former commissioner of the Truth Clarification Commission in Colombia), Lucía Mbomío Rubio (writer and TVE journalist), and Marwan (singer-songwriter, poet, and ambassador of the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees). It will be moderated by María Martín Delgado, a journalist from El País who writes about migration in Spain.

Admission to both discussions is free, but seating is limited.

In addition, as part of the "CajaCanarias Cultural Autumn 2025," four cultural events will take place, telling different stories of migrants.

For example, the play "Sahara. Boat of the Desert" starring actress Marta Viera. This is the story of a Canary nurse who came to work in El Aaiún in 1970, fell in love with a Sahrawi fighting for the independence of Western Sahara, and witnessed important historical events. A play about love, war, and the struggle of a people who do not want to disappear. It will be shown on October 14 at 20:00 at the Leal Theater. Tickets are available on www.cajacanarias.com.

On October 15, the documentary "No other land" (2024) about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict will be screened. This is the story of a young Palestinian, Basel Adra, who fights against the expulsion of his community, and an Israeli journalist, Yuval, who helps him. The film won an Oscar for Best Documentary. The screening is at 19:00 at the CajaCanarias Cultural Center, admission is free.

Asaari Bibang will entertain the audience with her anti-racist and Afro-feminist monologue "Black Humor." She will frankly and humorously talk about what it is like to be a woman, black, and a migrant in Spain. The performance will make you look at stereotypes and prejudices from a different perspective. It starts on October 16 at 20:00 at the Cultural Center. Tickets are available on www.cajacanarias.com.

The "Visibility Against the Current" days will conclude with a performance by Ana Tijoux, a well-known Latin American hip-hop artist. She combines music and social activism, singing about feminism, inequality, and human rights. She is called the best Spanish-language rapper and the Latin American answer to Lauryn Hill. In her music, she combines hip-hop, Latin American folk music, reggae, and electronica. Her latest album "Vida" (2024) is about resilience, humanity, and joy as a form of political resistance. The concert will take place on October 18 at 20:00 at the CajaCanarias Cultural Center. Tickets are almost sold out, but there are still some available on www.cajacanarias.com.
