The Cabildo Bookstore in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has officially reopened after a five-year closure, serving as a revitalized cultural hub dedicated to supporting Canarian literature and local authors.

After more than five years of closure, the Cabildo Bookstore in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has reopened its doors. Managed by the public company Ideco, the store’s return marks a significant shift in the island’s cultural policy, aiming to revitalize unique spaces and support the local publishing and literary community.

The reopening is part of a broader effort by the Cabildo to boost the local book industry. This includes providing direct subsidies to organizations like the Canary Islands Publishing Industry Guild (Greca) and the Provincial Association of Book Trade Entrepreneurs (Aprolite). These efforts complement other recent cultural initiatives, such as the opening of the Literature House Museum at Casa Estévanez-Borges and the launch of the new Nicolás Estévanez literary award.

Located at 4 Avenida Islas Canarias, next to the Baudet Theater, the bookstore is designed to be a hub for Canarian history, science, and thought. Local cultural and publishing figures attended the opening, welcoming the store as a vital platform for island authors. Throughout May, the bookstore’s window display will feature the work of writer Alberto Vázquez-Figueroa Rial.

Education will also play a key role in this new chapter. Starting May 6, author Víctor Conde will lead a series of free literary workshops. Held every Wednesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the sessions will cover topics ranging from narrative techniques and character development to the inner workings of the publishing industry. Those interested in attending can register by emailing info@libreriadelcabildo.net until all spots are filled.

The bookstore is open Monday to Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. On Thursdays and Fridays, it closes at 7:00 p.m. to accommodate cultural events. Saturday hours are 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
