Butane Gas Price Drops in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Offering Christmas Relief
Santa Cruz de Tenerife households will benefit from a 4% drop in the price of 12.5 kg butane cylinders, effective today until January 19, 2026, due to decreased international transport costs.
Good news for households in Santa Cruz de Tenerife this week, as the government has announced a drop in the price of butane gas. This new, lower price will be in effect from today and will stay the same through Christmas and into early 2026.
People are happy about this, especially with food prices already making shopping more expensive. The timing couldn't be better, as winter means more people are using butane for heating, cooking, and hot water.
The standard 12.5 kg butane cylinder is the only one with a legally set price. This means people always keep an eye on decisions from the Ministry for Ecological Transition, as any changes directly impact their wallets. Right now, any cut in the cost of essential supplies is a welcome relief for families.
The new price was officially published yesterday and is effective at gas stations and authorized sellers starting today.
The government controls the price of butane cylinders to prevent sudden increases that would hurt households. Even though the wider gas market is open, this specific cylinder has a maximum price set by the Ministry. This ensures it remains affordable and prevents price hikes of more than 5% at each review. All distribution companies must stick to this official price, even if they sell other gas products at different rates.
Throughout 2025, the price of butane has fluctuated. It rose from 16.64 euros to 18 euros between January and May, and then started to gradually decrease. This latest update confirms that downward trend and brings stability to a product that many households in the Canary Islands still rely on.
The regulated price is calculated based on taxes, transport costs, and international energy prices. Specifically, the final cost depends on:
- The cost of raw materials.
- Shipping costs.
- Taxes.
The price is reviewed every two months, on the third Monday of January, March, May, July, September, and November. The new price takes effect the following day.
From today, November 18th, until January 19th, 2026, the 12.5 kg butane cylinder will cost 15.46 euros. This is a 4% decrease from the previous price.
This price drop comes at a time when inflation is widespread, the cost of living is rising, and many raw materials are more expensive. The Ministry explained that this reduction is possible because of lower international transport costs, which are a major factor in the final price.
The government is assuring people that butane won't be a problem for Spanish households this Christmas, especially after the price reached 18 euros in May. The regular price reviews since then have helped to steadily lower the cost of this essential product for heating, hot water, and cooking.
