Buenavista del Norte Launches Public Consultation to Protect Historic District
The Buenavista del Norte City Council has launched a public consultation until August 9 to develop a new protection plan balancing the preservation of the town’s historic architecture with modern living requirements.
The preservation of historic architecture in northwestern Tenerife has reached a turning point. The Buenavista del Norte City Council has launched a public consultation to help shape a new Special Protection Plan for the town’s historic district. This roadmap aims to balance the preservation of local heritage with the needs of modern living. Residents and interested parties have until August 9 to submit their feedback, either through the municipal website or in person at the General Registry.
This initiative is significant because Buenavista’s town center is a living record of the island’s development following its 16th-century conquest. The area is culturally vital, defined by its orderly street layout and traditional homes that reflect the region’s agricultural history. The plan also aims to better manage key landmarks, such as the Church of Nuestra Señora de Los Remedios and its surrounding square, which serve as essential social hubs and popular tourist spots near the Teno Rural Park.
The challenge lies in protecting historic features—like traditional wooden balconies and original facades—while encouraging the town’s economic and social growth. By setting clear guidelines, the City Council hopes to prevent the deterioration of an area that has kept its original character for centuries. Public participation is vital to this process, ensuring the new regulations are not just technical rules, but a practical tool that improves accessibility and quality of life while keeping the town’s history relevant in the 21st century.
