British Tourist, 88, Dies After Violent Robbery in Tenerife

An 88-year-old British tourist has died in Tenerife following a violent robbery, reigniting concerns about safety in the island’s popular tourist areas. The man, who was celebrating his anniversary with his 79-year-old wife, passed away in the hospital where he had been treated since June 17.

The incident occurred on Calle Asomada del Morisco in Los Cristianos, Arona. While near their accommodation, the couple was targeted by a thief who attempted to snatch their belongings. During the struggle, the man fell and suffered a fatal cardiorespiratory arrest.

Police in South Tenerife are currently investigating the case to identify the person responsible. Legally, the situation is complex; investigators must determine the exact link between the robbery and the victim’s death to decide whether to charge the suspect with robbery with violence or reckless homicide. Under the Spanish Penal Code, if the assault is proven to be the direct cause of the man’s heart failure, the potential sentence could be significantly more severe.
