A 47-year-old British man has died after being fatally assaulted by a 23-year-old compatriot during a violent altercation in Tenerife's Playa de las Américas nightlife district.

A 47-year-old British man has died following a violent altercation in the nightlife district of Playa de las Américas, in the Tenerife municipality of Arona.

The incident occurred early Thursday morning near the Verónicas shopping center, a popular tourist area. Following the attack, police cordoned off the scene, forcing nearby businesses to close for several hours while officers investigated.

According to preliminary reports, the dispute began around 1:30 a.m. between the victim and a 23-year-old British man. Investigators believe the altercation started inside a venue after the older man allegedly threw a glass at the younger man. The argument then moved outside, where it turned physical.

Witnesses told police that the 23-year-old punched the victim, causing him to fall to the ground. The assailant then allegedly kicked the man in the head, leaving him unconscious. Despite efforts to help, the victim did not recover. Bystanders held the suspect at the scene until National Police arrived and took him into custody.

The incident has once again raised concerns regarding security in busy nightlife areas, where alcohol and large crowds can increase the risk of violence. Police and judicial authorities concluded their investigation and removed the body by 6:30 a.m. The case is now subject to a formal judicial inquiry.
