Bright Emerald Object Streaks Across Canary Islands Sky
A bright, emerald-colored object streaked across the night sky over the Canary Islands last Friday, prompting an investigation by experts to determine if it was a meteor or space debris.
A bright, emerald-colored object streaked across the sky over the Canary Islands last Friday night, sparking widespread curiosity and concern. The Emergency and Security Coordination Center (CECOES) 112 reported receiving numerous calls from across the islands around 11:37 p.m. from people who spotted the unusual flash.
While the exact cause is still being investigated, experts typically identify such events as bolides—meteors that glow brightly as they burn up in the upper atmosphere—or as disintegrating pieces of space debris. The Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC) is currently reviewing footage and reports from the public to determine the object's origin. Their analysis will be key in deciding whether this was a natural astronomical event or man-made debris, an increasingly common occurrence as more satellites are launched into orbit.
Authorities have clarified that an accidental car fire near a sports facility in Güímar, which happened around the same time, is completely unrelated to the sighting. While the investigation continues, emergency services have not yet reached a final conclusion about what the object was.
