Boreal Festival Returns to Los Silos for 19th Edition Focused on Sustainability and Inclusion

The Boreal Festival returns to Los Silos for its 19th edition from September 16 to 20. Organizers say the event has become a gold standard for cultural management in Spain, earning recognition from the Culture Observatory and the Iberian Festival Awards for its commitment to social and environmental responsibility.

This year’s festival focuses on three core values: accessibility, equality, and sustainability. To ensure the event is inclusive, organizers have removed physical barriers and added features for those with cognitive or sensory needs. These include sign-language interpretation, induction loops, sensory backpacks, and clear, adapted signage. A dedicated "Punto Naranja" (Orange Point) will be available in the Plaza de la Luz, along with a mobile team, to assist attendees with these services.

The festival also prioritizes equality, following a plan supported by the Association of Women in the Music Industry (MIM) and the Keychange initiative. This ensures gender balance in both leadership roles and the artistic lineup. Additionally, the festival provides "Good Treatment Spaces" and a "Punto Violeta" (Violet Point) to help prevent gender-based violence.

Environmental care remains a top priority. Through regular eco-audits, the festival tracks its impact, focusing on using local products, banning single-use plastics, and protecting local wildlife by scheduling most activities during the day.

On the artistic side, writer Andrea Abreu will receive the Boreal Prize for her work in highlighting peripheral culture. The program also features an artist residency by Diogo Machado at the Sala Pérez Enríquez and a diverse musical lineup including Daddy G, Aterciopelados, BCUC, Hempress Sativa, Imarhan, Rubio, Renata Flores, Throes + The Shine, El Veneno Crew, and the Jable project. By blending entertainment with strong ethical and social values, the Boreal Festival continues to set a high bar for cultural events.
