Body of Homeless Woman Found in Arona, Tenerife

The discovery of a woman’s body in Arona, Tenerife, has once again highlighted the extreme vulnerability of homeless people living in the Canary Islands. The body was found this Thursday in an open lot near the Las Galletas sports complex, an area where people frequently live in caravans and makeshift camps.

A passerby alerted the Arona Local Police after noticing a strong smell coming from the area. When officers arrived, they entered a tent that had been sealed from the inside and discovered the body of a foreign woman who, according to locals, had been living there for some time. The body was found covered by a blanket and in an advanced state of decomposition.

This tragedy underscores the precarious situation faced by those who have no choice but to sleep in public spaces. Residents described the woman as a familiar face who regularly used the beach showers in Las Galletas, though neighbors had noticed she had been missing for several days.

The Civil Guard is now investigating the cause of death. While an initial inspection showed no obvious signs of foul play, a formal autopsy will be required to determine exactly how and when she died. This case reflects the ongoing struggle with homelessness in the region, where those living on the streets often remain invisible to social services until it is too late.
