Binter NightRun Sells Out in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Drawing Record 7,000 Runners
The ninth Binter NightRun in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has sold out for the first time, drawing a record 7,000 participants to the island's largest sporting event while promoting sustainability and regional tourism.
The ninth Binter NightRun is set to make history in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. For the first time since it began, the event has completely sold out, with 7,000 runners expected this Saturday. This makes it the island’s largest sporting event, marking a massive jump from the 1,700 participants who took part in 2017.
Based at the Plaza de España, the event includes the Family Green Mile with 700 participants, as well as 5K and 10K races featuring 3,700 and 2,600 runners, respectively. The 10K race is officially certified by the Spanish Athletics Federation, drawing elite athletes looking to record official times. Runners can pick up their bibs at the Nivaria Shopping Center until Saturday morning.
The race also places a strong emphasis on sustainability and social responsibility. Organizers have cut out single-use plastics, used recycled materials for medals, and promoted local businesses. In a unique environmental initiative, over a thousand runners have opted out of receiving a medal, choosing instead to have their contribution donated to the Foresta Foundation for reforestation efforts. The event also prioritizes inclusivity, offering accessible options for athletes with disabilities and allowing Green Mile participants to choose where their charitable donations go.
Local leaders, including Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez and Cabildo Sports Minister Yolanda Moliné, have praised the race for bringing the community together and raising the city's profile. The Binter NightRun brand has already expanded to cities like Zaragoza and Murcia, supported by a broader strategy from Canary Islands Tourism. By investing over 12 million euros in similar events over the last year, the region aims to move beyond a "sun and beach" image, positioning the islands as a premier destination for high-impact sporting events.
