Beaver Supermoon to Light Up Canary Islands Sky Wednesday
The Beaver Supermoon, the last full moon of autumn and appearing at its largest and brightest of the year, will be visible in the Canary Islands on Wednesday, November 5th.
On Wednesday, November 5th, the Canary Islands sky will once again host a beautiful natural show: a full moon shining brightly. This full moon is popularly known as the Beaver Supermoon, and it will be the last one of autumn before winter begins.
The name "Beaver Moon" comes from ancient North American tribes. They started hunting beaver in November, using the bright full moon to help them before winter arrived. Eventually, this name became popular globally and is now part of the international astronomical calendar.
This year, the Beaver Supermoon will be particularly easy to see from mainland Spain and the Canary Islands. In the Canary Islands, the moon will be at its brightest around 9:00 PM. Astronomically, its fullest phase will happen during the night of Wednesday, November 5th, into Thursday, November 6th, reaching its peak around midnight Canarian time. At this point, the Moon will be about 356,833 kilometers from Earth, appearing at its largest and brightest of the year.
You can also enjoy the moon when it's low on the horizon. It will look more orange and appear larger. This will happen around 6:00 AM or 6:20 AM in Tenerife.
No need for telescopes or binoculars; you can see the full moon clearly with just your eyes. If clouds block the view, you can still see the Supermoon on the nights of November 4th and 6th, though it won't be quite as bright.
Tenerife is known for having some of the best spots to watch the night sky, making it easy for people on the island to enjoy this week's astronomical event. Teide National Park is an excellent place to go. From spots like the Izaña Viewpoint, the Teide National Parador, El Portillo, or the Las Cañadas area, visitors can get a clear view of the sky, far away from city lights.
