A fire at a battery shop in La Guancha, Tenerife, this Wednesday highlighted the unique challenges of extinguishing blazes involving energy storage systems. Emergency crews were quickly deployed to the scene, largely due to the shop’s proximity to a nearby gas station.
Firefighters from the Icod de los Vinos station faced significant difficulties controlling the flames. According to the Canary Islands’ Emergency and Security Coordination Center (Cecoes), the chemical composition of the batteries made the fire particularly stubborn, requiring a much longer intervention than the small size of the building would typically suggest.
Local police were on-site to assist, and fortunately, no one was injured. Because there were no reports of injuries or smoke inhalation, medical teams from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) were not required.
