Baseball and Softball Surge in Popularity Across Spain and Canary Islands
Baseball and softball are experiencing a surge in popularity across Spain, particularly in the Canary Islands, where registered player numbers have grown by nearly 45% since the pandemic.
Baseball and softball are surging in popularity across Spain, particularly in the Canary Islands, driven by a unique mix of cultural ties and migration. According to the Spanish and Canary Islands Baseball and Softball Federations, these sports are no longer niche activities. Nationwide, the number of registered players has jumped by 44.9% since before the pandemic, reaching 7,152 athletes in 2025.
The Canary Islands have become the heart of this growth. The regional federation saw a 42.3% increase in members in 2024—a faster rise than established sports like basketball or tennis. Tenerife is the primary hub, home to over half of the archipelago’s clubs, including the long-standing Tenerife Marlins Puerto Cruz and the rapidly rising Audaces, which reached the top division in just six years.
This trend is rooted in history. Strong ties to Cuba, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic brought these sports to the islands through migration. Today, leaders like Richard Montiel and Benson Salas are professionalizing club management to keep this heritage alive.
However, the sport still faces hurdles. Clubs rely heavily on public funding, struggle to find dedicated facilities, and must compete with soccer for young players. To stay relevant, federations are now introducing the sport in schools and promoting accessible versions like Baseball5 and Kickingball.
While the competitive level is at an all-time high—highlighted by the Tenerife Marlins’ undefeated "treble" in 2025—the leagues remain largely amateur. The next major goal is to build a stable economic foundation that allows athletes to play professionally. For now, the federation continues to rely on grassroots training and international talent, cementing its place as an increasingly vital part of the Spanish sports landscape.
