Bajamar Promenade Repairs Halted by Rough Seas
La Laguna City Council has paused repairs on Bajamar's Marianne promenade due to strong waves, highlighting the ongoing challenges of coastal protection against extreme weather.
Coastal areas are easily damaged by the more frequent extreme weather we're seeing. This is clear in Bajamar, where the La Laguna City Council has had to stop repairs on the Marianne promenade for now. Officials from the Public Works and Infrastructure department say this shows how hard it is for local governments to protect their coastlines and keep people safe from sea erosion.
The repair work started on January 15, using the department's own staff and equipment. Its goal is to fix the walking path and strengthen the coastal barriers, which were badly damaged by the sea during recent storms. The aim is to make sure people can walk there safely and easily. But strong waves in recent days have forced them to stop. The materials need calm, safe conditions to set properly, and workers need a safe environment.
Councilor Ángel Chinea stressed that these repairs are urgent because of the serious damage caused by recent bad weather at sea. He explained that the conditions at the coast have controlled how fast they can work, leading to the pause. This is to keep workers safe and allow the new materials in this important walking and protection area to settle correctly. The councilor added that their main focus is the safety of the area and quickly restoring this important spot in Bajamar, which is key for both locals and tourists.
Aside from this promenade work, the La Laguna council has been busy with other projects in Bajamar. Last week, they finished repaving Avenida El Sol, a main road that leads to the natural pools and the beach. Even though it's a single-lane road, it gets a lot of traffic, especially during holidays and weekends. In the coming months, the City Council plans to improve a section of the road that crosses Avenida El Sol. They will also fix up the Cornisa Achimencey sidewalk, which will involve new paving, adding outdoor exercise equipment, and new street furniture. These efforts show their dedication to improving the entire area.
