Bad Weather Disrupts Flights at Tenerife North Airport

Severe weather conditions at Tenerife North Airport caused multiple flight cancellations and diversions on Wednesday, with further disruptions expected as AEMET maintains a yellow wind warning for Thursday.

Unstable weather in the Canary Islands has once again exposed the operational challenges at Tenerife North Airport, where difficult terrain and frequent bad weather often cause delays. According to Europa Press, air travel was significantly disrupted this Wednesday, affecting both flights between the islands and routes to the mainland.

Operations were severely impacted, resulting in the cancellation of a flight from El Hierro. Additionally, five other flights—arriving from Madrid, Seville, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and La Palma—were diverted to Tenerife South Airport for safety reasons.

Travelers should expect further uncertainty in the coming hours. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a yellow weather warning for Thursday, forecasting northeast wind gusts of up to 70 kilometers per hour, which will primarily affect the islands' higher elevations and southeastern slopes.

Airport operator Aena and various airlines are urging passengers to check their flight status through official channels before heading to the airport. Under European regulations (EC 261/2004), airlines are not required to pay financial compensation for cancellations caused by severe weather, which is considered "force majeure." However, they are still obligated to provide passengers with assistance, clear information, and, where applicable, refunds or alternative travel arrangements. These recurring issues at Tenerife North serve as a reminder for passengers to stay updated on their flight plans during periods of poor weather.
