Spanish security forces at Melilla airport have seized 83 counterfeit luxury items worth an estimated 62,200 euros from a passenger’s luggage.

Security forces at Melilla airport have intercepted 83 counterfeit luxury leather goods. The items were discovered in the checked luggage of a 51-year-old passenger from Santa Cruz de Tenerife who was traveling to Madrid.

If sold on the black market, the goods would have been worth an estimated 62,200 euros. The seizure occurred during a routine check by the Fiscal and Border Analysis and Investigation Unit (UDAIFF). When questioned, the passenger could not provide proof of the items' legal origin, leading officers to seize the goods and begin legal proceedings.

This incident highlights how counterfeit networks continue to use air travel to transport illegal merchandise, which is often intended for street markets. The suspect now faces charges for a crime against industrial property. Under the Spanish Penal Code, this offense protects both brand intellectual property and consumer safety, as these products have not undergone any quality or safety testing.

Authorities worked closely with the affected brands to confirm the items were fake. These operations aim to stop commercial fraud and disrupt supply chains that rely on the underground economy and tax evasion. The seized goods are now being held by judicial authorities, who will determine the legal consequences for the attempt to bring these illicit products into the country.
