Authorities Dismantle Major Drug Production Operation in Southern Tenerife
Spanish authorities have dismantled a sophisticated drug production operation in southern Tenerife, resulting in the arrest of a suspect and the seizure of significant narcotics and processing equipment.
Authorities in southern Tenerife have dismantled a major drug production operation, known as "Operation Hermit," highlighting the ongoing challenge of large-scale illegal cultivation in the Canary Islands. The investigation, which began last November under the supervision of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Anti-Drug Prosecutor's Office, led to the arrest of a man with a history of drug-related offenses. He is accused of running a sophisticated system for producing and selling narcotics.
The operation was a joint effort involving the Civil Guard’s UDAIFF and PAFIF units, alongside Customs Surveillance. During the raid, officers shut down a facility equipped with the specialized machinery needed to process and distribute drugs. The volume of equipment and narcotics seized suggests the operation was large enough to supply markets well beyond the local area.
This case underscores the difficulties of policing rural areas, where criminals often use isolated farms to hide large-scale illegal activities. The success of this mission was largely due to close cooperation between different law enforcement agencies, which allowed them to dismantle not just the plantation, but the entire logistical network behind it.
While the main production hub has been neutralized, the investigation is ongoing. The suspect has been handed over to the courts, and investigators are now working to trace the wider distribution network and identify how the drugs were being moved, a vital step in fully dismantling the criminal organization.
