Authorities Clear Illegal Settlements in Granadilla de Abona Amid Persistent Coastal Management Challenges
Authorities in Granadilla de Abona have cleared an informal settlement along the coast, highlighting the ongoing challenge of balancing environmental protection with the region's persistent housing insecurity.
Coastal management in southern Tenerife is back in the spotlight following a recent operation in Granadilla de Abona. Local authorities, including the City Council and the Provincial Coastal Directorate, recently cleared an area between La Mareta and Agua Dulce in Los Abrigos. Supported by the Local Police, the Civil Guard, and cleaning crews, the operation went smoothly; the roughly ten people living there left voluntarily after receiving prior notice.
This is not an isolated incident, but part of a recurring issue along the Granadilla coast, where housing insecurity frequently clashes with the protection of public land. This marks the fourth such operation in the area in recent years, highlighting a persistent cycle: sites are often reoccupied almost immediately after being cleared. Recognizing that sporadic cleanups are ineffective, the Provincial Coastal Directorate now admits that permanent surveillance is necessary to properly protect these areas.
The challenge extends well beyond Los Abrigos. Other areas, such as the Los Balos ravine and the vicinity of the Hermano Pedro cave, are home to an estimated 100 people. Addressing this situation requires complex coordination between various government bodies, including the Island Water Council and environmental departments. The City Council is currently waiting for the permits needed to intervene in these locations, where the struggle to protect natural heritage meets the urgent need to address social vulnerability.
