The Auditorio de Tenerife launches its 16th Contemporary Music Festival this Friday, featuring the premiere of four commissioned works that highlight local talent and the intersection of voice and percussion.

The Auditorio de Tenerife kicks off the 16th Contemporary Music Festival (FMUC) this Friday at 7:30 p.m. This year’s opening focuses on homegrown talent, featuring the premiere of four new works commissioned specifically for the festival. Directed by Paco Díaz, who has led the project since 2010, the event continues its mission to champion avant-garde music, this time by involving students from the Professional Conservatory of Music of Tenerife.

The opening night in the Chamber Hall will feature tenor Airam Hernández and percussionist Verónica Cagigao. The event is designed to be educational; after each piece, the composers—José Luis Perdigón, Mario Carro, Samuel Aguilar, and Sergio Blardony—will discuss the technical and creative ideas behind their work with the audience.

The program explores the relationship between voice and instruments. José Luis Perdigón opens with Enceladus, a piece inspired by acoustic sounds beyond human experience. Next, Mario Carro presents Poemas de la Isla, which pairs the marimba with the poetry of Canarian writer Josefina de la Torre, featuring excerpts from Me busco y no me encuentro, Si ha de ser, and Remolinos del aire.

The concert continues with Samuel Aguilar’s Del Llanto, which uses electronics, bass drum, and triangle to interact with verses by Federico García Lorca. Finally, Sergio Blardony closes the premieres with …and Suddenness, a work that uses the fragmented rhythm of Emily Dickinson’s poetry to guide the interaction between the tenor, percussion, and electronics.

This concert is just the start of a series of events. The festival continues with Francis Hernández’s Variaciones sobre temas canarios on the 5th, performances by Marta Klimarasa, Andrea Domínguez, María Vera, and Verónica Cagigao on the 6th, and a recital by Polish percussionist Marianna Bednarska on the 7th.

Tickets are available through the Auditorio de Tenerife’s website, by phone at 902 317 327, or at the box office (open Monday to Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturdays, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.). Discounted rates are available for students, the unemployed, and large families.
