Auditorio de Tenerife Adds Sunday Matinee for Sold-Out Play 'Dysphoria'
The Auditorio de Tenerife has added a Sunday matinee performance of María Goiricelaya’s Dysphoria following high demand for the play, which explores the legal and social complexities of gender identity.
As part of the Auditorio de Tenerife’s cultural season, the 'La Salita' series presents Dysphoria this weekend. Written and directed by María Goiricelaya and performed by Histrión Teatro, the play explores the social and legal challenges surrounding gender identity. The production is a powerful monologue featuring Gema Matarranz, who portrays every character on stage to examine how gender transition affects family dynamics and the boundaries of the law.
The story begins when a 16-year-old reveals their gender identity, forcing the protagonist to navigate a difficult path of uncertainty and resistance. The tension intensifies when the character faces a police accusation of sexual abuse, raising urgent questions about individual rights and the fairness of the judicial system. Beyond a personal story, the play invites the audience to reflect on how current laws and social norms—particularly in the context of the ongoing Trans Law debate—shape people's lives.
Demand for the show has been high, with Friday and Saturday’s 7:30 p.m. performances already sold out. Due to this interest, organizers have added a Sunday matinee at 12:00 p.m. Following the Sunday performance, students from the Canary Islands School of Actors will host a public discussion to explore the play’s ethical and social themes.
Tickets for the final show are eight euros, with a discounted rate of five euros for those under 30. They can be purchased via the Auditorio de Tenerife website, by calling 902 317 327, or at the venue's box office. The box office is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
