Atlético Paso Claims Historic First Copa Heliodoro Title in Extra-Time Win
Atlético Paso secured their first-ever Copa Heliodoro Rodríguez López title with a 3-1 extra-time victory over UD Añaza following a decisive red card for the Tenerife side.
Atlético Paso has won the Copa Heliodoro Rodríguez López for the first time after a hard-fought victory over UD Añaza. The final, held at the Tenerife stadium before 2,134 spectators, was decided in extra time, marking a historic achievement for both clubs as neither had previously won the trophy.
The turning point came early in extra time when Añaza goalkeeper Edwin Morales was sent off. This numerical advantage allowed Atlético Paso to break down the Tenerife side, which had fought back to force extra time after Aday Pestano’s 81st-minute equalizer.
The match was a game of two halves. Atlético Paso dominated the first period and took an early lead through Gabriel Quintero. However, after the break, Añaza took control and pushed their opponents back. Following Morales’ 91st-minute red card for a foul on Pezzolesi, Atlético Paso regained the momentum. Late goals from Facu Álvarez in the 109th minute and Guille Roque in the 117th minute secured a 3-1 win.
Before kickoff, both teams shared a moment of mutual respect, forming a guard of honor for each other to celebrate their respective league titles in the Tercera RFEF and Preferente divisions. The trophy was presented by Juan Manuel García Hernández, acting president of the Tenerife Football Federation.
While Atlético Paso’s physical edge proved decisive in the final stages, Añaza earned praise for competing on equal terms with a higher-division opponent for most of the 120-minute contest.
