Local artist Víctor Pacheco has revitalized Puerto de la Cruz's sports facilities with new murals that celebrate diverse athletic disciplines and promote gender representation.

The recent artistic makeover at the Miguel Ángel Díaz Molina sports complex and the Santiago Yanes pavilion in Puerto de la Cruz is more than just a fresh coat of paint; it is a true revitalization of public space. Local artist Víctor Pacheco, known as "Kob Tropical," has finally completed this ambitious project, a long-held goal to give back to his community.

Approved by the local council years ago, the project was brought to life over the last two weeks to restore facilities that had become worn over time. Under the guidance of technician Adán Farráis, the murals now feature seven different sports: basketball, fencing, rhythmic gymnastics, futsal, volleyball, boxing, and jiu-jitsu. Notably, Pacheco made a conscious effort to highlight female athletes in sports where women have historically been underrepresented, adding a layer of social importance to the artwork.

Pacheco’s career spans 30 years and includes formal training in sculpture, mirroring the broader shift of urban art in Spain from the fringes to mainstream recognition. Having showcased his work at international events like the Miami Art Fair, he has successfully woven his unique style into the daily life of his hometown.

Beyond the spray paint, the project’s real success is how it connects with the community. Pacheco notes that the murals have encouraged people of all ages to interact, turning the sports complex into a shared space. By embracing the principles of "tactical urbanism," the project aims to foster a sense of public ownership, with the hope that the community will take pride in—and protect—this new cultural landmark.
