Arona Unveils Permanent Heritage Canvas in Valle San Lorenzo

Arona City Council has put up a large canvas on General Road and Barranco de Valle San Lorenzo Street. This project, led by the Department of Culture and Historical-Cultural Heritage, features important images from the neighborhood's recent past. Besides making a key spot in Valle San Lorenzo look better, the canvas aims to share moments of daily life that helped shape the town's unique identity and traditions with both locals and visitors.

The canvas features photographs of old farming life, including scenes of growing tomatoes and potatoes, and general field work. It also shows camels, which were traditionally used animals in the area. Alongside these are festive moments like the Fátima pilgrimage, outdoor festivals, and neighborhood gatherings. Personal milestones that marked different eras, such as communions, confirmations, and birthday celebrations, are also included. Each image captures a way of life and a sense of place that is still important to residents today.

Naím Yánez Alonso, the Second Deputy Mayor and Culture Councilor, explained that "this project offers an open window to Valle's past decades. It reminds us of who we were and what still lives on in the memories of many families. We wanted people passing through this area to see a part of history that is usually kept hidden away in boxes, photo albums, or personal recollections."

Yánez Alonso also noted that "heritage isn't always preserved in grand buildings or museum pieces. Sometimes, it's found in photographs that capture the daily life of a hardworking, festive community proud of its roots. That's why it was important to bring these images out into the street and give them the public display they deserve."

The installation will remain on permanent display. It's part of the city's efforts to highlight the historical legacy of Arona's communities, bringing their history to street level and enhancing the urban environment.
