Arona’s newly launched K9 unit has made its first arrest and drug seizure, marking a successful start to the town's enhanced strategy for combating street-level narcotics trafficking.

Arona’s new K9 unit is already delivering results, strengthening the town’s strategy to combat local drug trafficking. Just one week after its official launch on May 20, the specialized team helped police arrest a 28-year-old man. Officers seized various narcotics, including cocaine, MDMA, and "tusi," along with cash. The suspect now faces charges for crimes against public health.

The unit, which includes three trained dogs and a specially equipped vehicle, supports regular patrols in school zones and busy leisure areas. Councilor Héctor Reyes noted that the team was created to provide officers with better tools to monitor public spaces effectively.

For a municipality like Arona, which sees high numbers of both residents and tourists, this specialized unit is a key step in tackling street-level drug dealing. The detection dogs act as a powerful deterrent and allow officers to identify illicit substances more accurately in crowded areas. Local officials say the unit is already proving its value, successfully balancing a visible police presence with advanced technical support.
