Arona Restaurant Manager Sentenced to Prison for €72,600 Embezzlement Scheme
A former restaurant manager in Arona has been sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay 72,600 euros for embezzling funds by manipulating billing software to pocket cash payments.
The Provincial Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has sentenced a former restaurant manager in Arona to two years in prison for misappropriating funds. In addition to the jail term, he has been ordered to pay a total of 72,600 euros in fines. The defendant has already appealed the ruling to the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands.
The court found that between May 2016 and June 2018, the manager used his position and technical expertise to manipulate the restaurant’s billing software. He systematically deleted orders after they had been served, allowing him to pocket cash payments without them appearing in the daily accounts.
While the defense argued that the manager lacked the technical skill to carry out such a scheme and questioned the security of the restaurant's access codes, expert evidence proved otherwise. An analysis revealed a 59% spike in cancelled invoices during the defendant’s tenure.
The financial impact was significant. Although the defendant admitted to diverting 4,000 euros to cover customer expenses, forensic reports calculated the actual loss at 71,000 euros—17,000 in 2016, 33,500 in 2017, and nearly 21,000 in 2018. When confronted in July 2018, the manager reportedly asked to keep his job, offered to repay the money, and cited a gambling addiction as the reason for his actions.
This case serves as a warning for small and medium-sized businesses about the risks of lax internal security. The court’s decision highlights how easily management software can be exploited without strict access controls and regular, independent audits.
