Arona PSOE Outlines 2027 Election Strategy Focused on Ousting Current Coalition
Arona’s PSOE, led by former mayor José Julián Mena, is preparing for the 2027 elections by rejecting formal alliances and campaigning on issues of housing, public services, and opposition to the Los Cristianos port expansion.
The PSOE in Arona is preparing for the 2027 elections by focusing on a clear strategy: distancing itself from early alliances and highlighting the shortcomings of the current local government. According to Diario de Avisos, former mayor José Julián Mena has ruled out formal partnerships with groups like Más por Arona, choosing instead to focus on direct engagement with voters.
Mena, who leads a group of eight councilors, aims to win back the mayoralty by growing his party's support. His campaign centers on three main issues: the housing shortage, declining public services—particularly waste management—and growing concerns over public safety. He argues that the current coalition government (PP, Coalición Canaria, and Vox) lacks leadership, leading to administrative delays and poor budget management that negatively impact local neighborhoods.
Additionally, Mena has taken a firm stance against the expansion of the port of Los Cristianos. He describes this as a non-negotiable position, aiming to tap into local frustration with what he calls Mayor Fátima Lemes’s passive approach to the project.
These moves come against the backdrop of the PSOE’s recent internal struggles in Arona. Mena used the opportunity to defend his actions during the previous term’s crisis, which led to intervention by the party’s federal leadership. By framing his past decisions as matters of transparency and legality, he is signaling his political resilience and suggesting that his previous stance has been vindicated. With this approach, the Arona PSOE hopes to move past its history of instability and establish itself as the primary alternative to a government it claims is no longer capable of meeting the municipality’s needs.
