The Socialist Municipal Group in Arona has demanded urgent government action to address deteriorating urban infrastructure, pest infestations, and safety hazards in the San Martín de Porres and Santa Rita neighborhoods.

Urban maintenance in Arona has become a major political issue following complaints from the Socialist Municipal Group. Led by José Julián Mena, the party reports that residents in the San Martín de Porres and Santa Rita housing developments are frustrated by crumbling infrastructure and a lack of basic sanitation.

The situation has become so dire that residents are now cleaning their own streets. Problems include a surge in pests—specifically rodents and insects in the sewage system and homes—as well as piles of trash and plant debris left on public roads. There is also growing concern over safety near the Cabo Blanco Primary School. On Abrigaño Street, an unstable embankment has been left unrepaired for three weeks. Combined with cracked walls, sunken pavements, and temporary fencing, the area has become difficult and dangerous for pedestrians, particularly children.

Opposition members José Julián Mena and Haridian Cruz argue that the local government is failing to provide basic services. They also criticized the council’s poor communication, pointing to recent confusion over roadwork schedules, where last-minute notices were simply taped over old signs, causing parking chaos for neighbors.

Beyond the immediate need to fix the embankment and inspect the area, the PSOE is calling for urgent risk prevention ahead of the rainy season. They are demanding a thorough cleaning of local water channels, particularly the Lere ravine, where weeds and trash could block natural drainage.

The Socialists are urging the City Council to launch an emergency plan that includes pest control, waste removal, and a consistent maintenance schedule that doesn't rely on residents having to complain before action is taken. They have called on the local government to end its inaction and provide a clear timeline for restoring these neighborhoods.
