Arona Opens New Sustainable Public Square in El Palm-Mar
Arona City Council has inaugurated a sustainable new public square in El Palm-Mar, enhancing coastal accessibility and providing a revitalized community space for residents.
Arona City Council has officially opened a new public square in El Palm-Mar, marking a significant shift in how the Tenerife municipality manages its coastline. The project, finalized on March 26, 2026, provides a new recreational space while helping to better connect the town’s growing residential areas with the sea—a common challenge for urban planning in the Canary Islands.
Led by Javier Baute, the Department of Urban Planning used a public-private partnership to acquire the land, making the project possible. The design focuses on sustainability, featuring permeable paving and an efficient water management system to support local, salt-tolerant plants.
Mayor Fátima Lemes Reverón noted that the square is part of a broader effort to improve local accessibility and urban quality. The goal is to transform the seafront from an overlooked area into a vibrant community hub. With new street furniture and improved lighting, the square is designed to encourage walking and provide a much-needed gathering place for residents.
The opening of this square reflects Arona’s commitment to reclaiming the coast for public use. By improving pedestrian access and prioritizing environmental resilience, the project sets a new standard for how the municipality balances urban growth with the protection of its coastal landscape.
