Arona Officials Seek Increased Police Presence Amid Rising Crime in Tenerife Tourist Hubs
Arona officials and local business leaders are calling for an increased police presence in Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos to combat a recent rise in crime and disorder.
Security in Tenerife’s most popular tourist areas is back in the spotlight. The Arona City Council and the Milla de Oro Association have officially requested more police officers for Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos. This move follows a recent rise in crime that has impacted both local businesses and the experience of visitors.
The issues range from shoplifting and theft in shops and outdoor cafes to public fights and general disorder. These incidents have caused significant concern among staff and business owners in the area. In response, the local government is working with regional and national authorities to coordinate a stronger security presence, involving the National Police, the Canary Islands Police, and extra support from the Local Police.
The proposed plan goes beyond just adding more officers. Local authorities want a coordinated strategy that targets specific high-risk areas and times when incidents are most frequent. They also aim to improve communication between business owners and security forces. These plans will be finalized at an upcoming meeting of the Local Security Board, where officials will define the roles and responsibilities of each agency.
Business leaders are eager to help, noting that the reputation of the area depends on visitors feeling safe. Arona’s mayor, Fátima Lemes Reverón, stated that protecting residents and tourists is a top priority. While the local police are already working their usual shifts, officials agree that the current situation requires more support from other law enforcement agencies. Business owners believe that a clear, unified plan is the best way to ensure safety and make the most of public resources.
