Arona Marks Decade Since Deadly Los Cristianos Building Collapse Amid Legal Frustration

Ten years after the collapse of the Julián José building in Los Cristianos, Arona, the tragedy remains a stark reminder of the fragility of building safety and the frustrations of the Spanish legal system. The disaster, which occurred on April 14, 2016, claimed seven lives and injured three others, leaving behind a community still searching for closure.

Technical investigations found that the building, constructed in 1973, had long-standing structural vulnerabilities. Experts concluded that the building relied on partition walls for stability. A 2003 renovation on the ground floor, which altered the building's load-bearing balance, ultimately triggered the collapse of a structure that had been failing for decades.

Despite the scale of the disaster—which required the evacuation of 90 people and a massive emergency response—the legal aftermath has offered little comfort to the victims. The criminal case was dismissed in 2018, and in January 2025, civil proceedings ended with the acquittal of the defendants. The outcome highlights the immense difficulty of proving legal responsibility when accidents involve both original construction defects and later modifications.

The impact on Arona remains deep. For years, the site of the collapse stood as a desolate reminder of the tragedy. Recently, however, the local community transformed the space with a 30-meter mural depicting the coastal landscape, unveiled in February 2025. While the mural helps heal the visual scar left on the town, the lack of a clear legal ruling means the burden of the tragedy still rests heavily on the survivors. Today, the community will hold a minute of silence at 9:30 a.m. to honor those lost.
