The municipality of Arona has launched a new Police Canine Unit featuring three certified dogs to enhance preventive surveillance and public safety across its busy tourist and residential areas.

Arona is upgrading its public safety strategy with the launch of a new Police Canine Unit (UCK9). The initiative introduces three dogs—Champion, Trueno, and Nami—to work alongside their handlers, providing officers with more advanced tools for preventive surveillance. This move is designed to help the local police better manage the unique needs of a busy municipality that attracts both residents and large numbers of tourists.

The new unit is part of a broader effort to modernize local police operations. During the official launch, Mayor Fátima Lemes and department head Héctor Reyes highlighted that the dogs will play a key role in proactive policing. By patrolling leisure areas, school zones, and crowded public events, the unit aims to deter crime and improve safety in busy environments where traditional policing can be difficult.

The project relies on the specialized training of the dogs, all of which have passed official police certifications. Their handlers have also undergone specific training to ensure the animals are treated well and used effectively in the field. By focusing on prevention rather than just reacting to incidents, the local government hopes this new unit will make the police more visible and better equipped to handle the evolving safety challenges of the community.
