Arona Joins VioGén System to Strengthen Gender-Based Violence Protection

Arona has reached a major milestone in its security strategy by joining the Comprehensive Monitoring System for Gender-Based Violence (VioGén). Following a recent Local Security Board meeting, the City Council finalized a collaboration protocol with national security forces, allowing the Local Police to integrate into this national platform. VioGén is designed to centralize information and assess risks to victims in real time, ensuring a faster and more coordinated police response.

The agreement was signed by Mayor Fátima Lemes Reverón and the Government Sub-delegate in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Jesús Javier Plata Vera. This marks the first step toward full integration, with plans to include the National Police in the system during a later phase. The rollout is being overseen by officials from the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands.

The meeting also addressed security in the area’s busy tourist zones. In response to local requests, the Provincial Head of the National Police, Vicente Martínez Guillem, confirmed that the Playa de Las Américas Police Station has been reinforced with 40 new officers and 20 trainees.

The session also reviewed the current agreement with the Canary Islands Police. Local officials, including Councilors Héctor Reyes and Alexis Gómez, joined police leadership to discuss these updates. These new coordination efforts aim to make the best use of police resources in a municipality with a complex, high-traffic population, ensuring that the protection of vulnerable women remains a top priority.
