The Arona City Council has formally requested urgent maritime intervention to address dangerous boat overcrowding and environmental damage off the coast of Los Cristianos.

The overcrowding of boats along the Los Cristianos coastline has reached a breaking point, shifting from a simple port management issue to a serious concern for tourism and public safety. The Arona City Council has filed a formal complaint with maritime and coastal authorities, warning that the uncontrolled anchoring of vessels off Las Vistas beach is damaging the area’s primary recreational asset.

This issue has become a recurring problem each summer. Beyond the visual impact on the destination, the congestion poses real risks to swimmers and threatens the local marine environment. Mayor Fátima Lemes and Environment Councilor Clari Pérez have pointed out that the local government lacks the legal authority to regulate maritime traffic or issue fines on the water, as these responsibilities belong to state and regional bodies. Despite this, the City Council is pushing for action, urging the responsible authorities to step up surveillance and control.

The Council is not calling for a total ban on boating. Instead, they are proposing a structured management plan that includes clearly marked swimming zones, designated anchoring areas, and more frequent maritime inspections. This push follows a growing number of complaints from residents and clear evidence of overcrowding, which the Council hopes will lead to disciplinary action against those violating current regulations.

This situation highlights the difficulty of managing busy coastal areas where tourism demand often exceeds environmental limits. The City Council argues that a lack of coordination between coastal, port, and state authorities is leading to a disorderly environment that is incompatible with the safety and sustainability standards expected of a top-tier destination. Ultimately, Arona is calling for an end to administrative inaction, urging officials to implement a clear plan that allows both boating and beachgoers to coexist safely.
