Arona City Council Approves Proactive Flood Prevention Plan
Arona’s city council has unanimously approved a proactive flood-prevention plan that integrates infrastructure upgrades, nature-based drainage solutions, and digital monitoring to better protect the municipality from extreme weather.
Arona’s city council has unanimously approved a new plan to tackle flood risks, marking a significant step toward better protecting the region from heavy rainfall. The move signals a shift away from simply reacting to emergencies toward a more proactive, long-term strategy to manage the area’s vulnerability to storms.
The proposal, led by the Socialist group (PSOE), calls for a thorough review of the municipality’s rainwater drainage systems. Key measures include clearing riverbeds and ravines, as well as introducing "nature-based" solutions—such as permeable pavements and more green spaces—to help absorb runoff. Former mayor and PSOE spokesperson José Julián Mena emphasized that a structured plan is essential to protect local homes and businesses.
The plan highlights several high-risk areas that require immediate attention, including Palm-Mar, the surroundings of Guaza, the access roads to Los Cristianos, and the coastline at Las Galletas. Additionally, the initiative aims to modernize prevention efforts by installing digital sensors to help emergency services and Civil Protection respond more effectively.
Clari Pérez, speaking for the governing Coalición Canaria, supported the motion while noting that many of these projects are already underway. She explained that the City Council is working closely with the Island Water Council on a prevention program and that recent changes to maintenance and cleaning contracts will help improve ongoing flood-prevention work.
This push by Arona’s council reflects a broader need for cities to become more resilient. As climate change increases the frequency of extreme weather, updating infrastructure to improve water management and soil permeability has become a vital part of modern urban planning and public safety.
